Vermont motorcycle helmet Laws

A rider cannot ride or operate a motorcycle in Vermont if they are not wearing a protective helmet that meets the requirement of the federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

As per Vermont state motorcycle helmet use laws, a rider cannot operate or ride a motorcycle if they are not wearing a helmet. The helmet should meet the federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The motorcyclist needs to wear eye protection as well unless they have a windshield or windscreen on their bike.

The Vermont Motorcycle Manual indicates that riders can avoid serious injuries if they wear DOT-compliant helmets, eye and face protection, and protective clothing. It states that crashes mainly occur among beginner and untrained motorcyclists and one out of every five bike accidents results in neck or head injuries. These injuries are reduced when riders wear quality helmets.

Vermont motorcycle helmet laws were repealed in 1968. All motorcycle drivers and passengers in Vermont are required by law to wear a helmet that has been authorized by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Despite the fact that the Commissioner does have the authority to approve helmet types, the Vermont legislature passed a law mandating all helmets to have either a neck to chin strap or a chin strap. While riding a motorbike in Vermont, check with the Department of Motor Vehicles to be sure your helmet meets the Commissioner’s criteria.
